Brady throws four TDs, three to Moss, in dominant win to clinch division

Randy Moss stared at the scoreboard after his third touchdown catch and saw a fan wearing a Randy Moss mask on the screen.

The real Randy — the one who played hard Sunday — stood on the sideline with a huge grin as he made his parting-of-the-defense motion, sweeping his arms from his chest to his sides.

“That was very entertaining,” Moss said after the New England Patriots clinched the AFC East title with a 35-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. “I had a lot of my teammates wanting me to mess with the guy. So he put a little humor into it and I enjoyed it.”

After his last home game, a 20-10 win over Carolina, several Panthers questioned his effort. So did Patriots fans the following week. But on Sunday they chanted his name, “Randy, Randy, Randy.”

And Moss, who has sold the mask on his Web site , appreciated it.

Defense Hasn’t Lost Confidence

The big play was the big problem.

Identifying the big plays of the Saints’ explosive offense as what doomed his team in a 38-17 loss on Monday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick stood by his defense yesterday.

“I have confidence in our players, in our coaches, in our scheme, and I think we’ve been competitive defensively all year,” Belichick said in a conference call. “Not that we’ve been perfect by any means. We’ve had times where we’ve had some problems like any defense has. But from a league-wide basis we’ve been pretty competitive, but we weren’t (Monday) night.”

The Saints averaged a franchise-record 9.6 yards per play and quarterback Drew Brees averaged an astounding 16.1 yards per pass attempt as New Orleans torched the Pats defense.

Brees hit Devery Henderson on a 33-yard completion on the first play from scrimmage, the first of seven Saints plays that gained 25 yards or more. The ugliest was a 75-yard TD pass to a wide-open Henderson.

“We just had a blown call,” Pats defensive coordinator Dean Pees said. “It was disappointing (Monday) because it wasn’t exactly a call that was a new call. It’s something that we have done numerous, numerous times. We even actually had the communication and for whatever reason, (the defender) froze and it happened.”

Porter’s mouth helped fuel Patriots

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said Monday that the team used Joey Porter’s trash talk as a spark leading up to Sunday’s 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

“It’s really motivating for our team throughout the course of the week and into the game when you hear that kind of stuff,” Brady said on his weekly appearance on the “Dennis & Callahan” show on Boston radio station WEEI. “I think the guys take it to heart and the coaches take it to heart.”

Last week, Porter said there was “no question” that Brady is getting favorable calls from officials this season. Brady missed most of the 2008 season with a knee injury suffered when he was hit by a player on the ground. In March, the NFL clarified a rule, making it a personal foul for a player on the ground to lunge and hit a quarterback below the knee unless he’s blocked or fouled. Some have referred to it as the “Brady Rule.”

In the receiving line?

Patriots wide receiver Brandon Tate has spent most of his rookie season working out and taking notes. This week he finally got the chance to practice.

Tate was on the non-football injury list as he recovered from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his knee suffered during his senior season at North Carolina. The designation meant Tate could not practice until after the sixth game of the season. Now the Patriots have 21 days to determine whether they want to activate Tate, release him, or place him on the season-ending reserve list.

Tackle Mark LeVoir (shoulder) is in the same boat, as he was on the physically unable to perform list.

Tate has been itching for a chance, and he is joining the mix at the right time. The Patriots released veteran receiver Joey Galloway Tuesday, and receiver Julian Edelman has a forearm injury that kept him out of practice yesterday.

Galloway joins long list of wide receiver blunders

The Joey Galloway experiment ended with nothing more than a whimper on the field from the veteran (7 catches, 67 yards in three games) and a grunt from Bill Belichick.

“(We) moved on on that one,” Belichick explained Tuesday. “He’s had a great career. It’s just one of those things; it just didn’t work out. I don’t think it’s anybody’s fault or anything that you can pinpoint, it’s just one of those things that didn’t work out.”

The 37-year-old Galloway’s exit leaves the Patriots at about 3-15 when it comes to wide receiver moves in the Belichick Era.

Of course, Randy Moss and Wes Welker are the hits. Drafting Deion Branch in round 2 in 2002 ranks as the third victory. Of course, Branch being dealt to Seattle when the team chose not to pay him counts as a loss, too, one you can argue from which the Pats have yet to recover.
